introduction annotated

This is the one that started it all. I'll begin by discussing the events surrounding the creation of the "Miranda" cd in this annotated introduction.

It was winter break 1999, and I use the term "winter break" in an expressly collegiate sense. Me and my sister have an abnormal penchant for high school movies. Not specifically 1980's high school movies but just in general, some yadda movie with an attractive cast, you know. After finishing a rousing double header of "American Pie" and "10 things I hate about you", I could feel my brain pulsing and milky white fluid drip out of my eyes. I had to do something. I had to make a cd. An 80's high school movie, about a girl, John Hughes style. I began to brainstorm. I needed a name. That was the key. It was about a girl, her name would be the title. I was in Miami (uh) over the millennial New Year and at some point the name Miranda popped into my head. I didn't know anyone named Miranda and it's a hot name, no?

On January 5, 2000 I returned to Chicago and started work on the album. The Intro was the first song I made. Essentially all the beats were finished by mid-February, with a little touch up needed. This was our first serious rhyming endeavor. It was the first time king kung fu (aka Murlot) rhymed on a track that wasn't a Wu-Tang instrumental. It was the first time I could listen to a track I rhymed on and not cringe with embarrassment. Something happened with Miranda. It created a moment. To this day people say it's our best work. I don't know if I agree. Shit wouldn't be shit without Miranda and it catapulted us into psychotic beat obsession but I think of it more like a strong start or solid beginning to where we are now. It was magical, it was a moment and now it is trapped in time, like in Superman 2 where the evil space prisoners are spinning around in the 2 dimensional prison. Oh, and also, this whole album was started and carried out to meet / get with a girl. I'm not kidding. I met this girl on an airplane flying to visit my parents for the 1999 winter break. She said she could sing and bla bla bla, I fabricated a project to work on with her. Also it's convenient working on a fictional love story while pursuing a real one yourself, lots of inspiration / frustration / real life to draw on.

That girl did end up singing on 3 of the Miranda tracks and I learned an important lesson: If you want to court a girl then make an album that's obviously, yet thinly veiled, about her.
